Pearls
Pearls are soft and even though they come from water, they don’t like humidity. They are organic and contain a small amount of water and can dry out, crack, or lose luster if exposed to extreme heat, direct sunlight for long periods, or very dry air.
Protect from perfumes, lotions, oils, hairspray and makeup. Avoid saltwater, chlorine and any harsh soap, chemical or acid. Both can harm the luster of your pearls over time.
Remove before swimming, bathing and physical activity.
Avoid sleeping in your jewellery, as pulling or bending can cause friction and damage your strands over time.
Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners, as they can shatter pearls.
After wearing
Wipe each pearl gently with a soft, lint-free cloth, (microfiber or soft cotton) to remove possible oils, perspiration, and traces of perfume before they can settle in.
Storage
Handle with clean, dry hands and store flat in a soft pouch or lined jewellery box in a dry place when not in use. It is prefered not to hang them, as the silk thread could stretch and loosen the knots. Also keep them separate from your other metal jewellery to prevent unwanted scratches.
Silk thread
The thread on most classic pearls is silk; strong, but not indestructible. If you wear your pearls regularly, natural oils from your skin can affect the thread over time. Frequent wear can also loosen the knots between pearls, which means restringing every 2-3 years.
Gemstones
Like your pearls, your gemstone jewellery deserves same care and attention. Some gemstones are soft and porous, while others can fade in direct sunlight over time or become damaged by water. Because each stone behaves differently, the safest approach is to treat all of them with the same gentle care. Wipe your gemstone jewellery with a soft, dry cloth and avoid water, soap, lotions and harsh chemicals and remove before sleeping, bathing and physical activity.
Store your pieces flat in a soft pouch or lined box, away from direct light and humidity.
Clasps
Sterling silver will tarnish over time, which is a normal process. Wipe with a special polishing cloth made for silver. Gold-filled and gold-plated stainless steel are more resistant but still benefit from gentle wiping.
